北海道南部～南西諸島に分布、沿岸から沖合の岩礁域や砂泥底に生息する。非常に貪欲な捕食者であるが、人間を襲うことはない。危険が迫ったりすると、フグのように海水や空気を飲み込んで腹部を膨らませるという習性を持っている。卵生で一度に2個の卵を産む。卵には四隅に巻きひげがあり、海藻やサンゴなどに絡まって流されないようになっている。

北海道～九州に分布、潮だまりなど沿岸の岩礁域に生息する。庄内浜ではアゴハゼとともに磯場でもっともふつうに見られるハゼである。アゴハゼとよく似ているが、体は暗灰色で小白点が散在する（アゴハゼは大きめの白斑）、胸鰭・尾鰭に黒点列がない（アゴハゼは胸鰭・尾鰭に黒点列がある）ことで区別できる。

傘を真上から見ると中央に×印のように見える生殖腺が特徴的。
ポリプが非常に小さいため、繁殖が難しい。
庄内浜では３～５月に港湾など波の穏やかな所に出現するため、春を告げるクラゲとも呼ばれている。
和名は、100年ほど前に来日したドイツの生物学者フランツ・ドフラインに由来する。
This species is distributed along coastal areas from Hokkaido to western Japan.
When viewed from directly above, its characteristic feature is a reproductive gland appearing like an X-mark at the center.
Breeding is difficult because the polyps are extremely small.
They appear in calm areas like harbors along Shonai Beach from March to May, earning them the name “jellyfish heralding spring.”
The Japanese name originates from Franz Doflein, a German biologist who came to Japan about 100 years ago.

日本各地に分布する。袖状突起が大きい。刺激を受けると、袖状突起を開閉して蝶が羽ばたくように泳ぐ。
飼育は難しいが、当館では繁殖にも成功している。
Found throughout Japan. Possesses large lobes.
When stimulated, it opens and closes these lobes to swim in a manner resembling a butterfly flapping its wings.
Though difficult to keep in captivity, our facility has successfully bred them.
Additionally, it is an exception among comb jellies in being dioecious.
