クラゲのように見えるが、ポリプ群体である。名前の由来は中央のキチン質が銀貨に見えるため。
ポリプは青色または白色の枝を多数そなえた群体を形成し、銀白色の円盤状の浮きの下に付着して水面に浮遊している。飼育が非常に難しく、展示期間は数週間程度。じっと見てると、ポリプからクラゲが遊離する様子が観察できる。
庄内地方には秋ごろにやってくることが多い。
This species resembles a jellyfish but is actually a polyp colony.
Its name originates from its central chitinous structure resembling a silver coin.
The polyps form colonies with numerous blue or white branches, attached beneath a silvery-white, disc-shaped float that keeps them afloat on the water surface.They are extremely difficult to keep in captivity, with exhibition periods lasting only a few weeks.
If you watch closely, you can observe jellyfish detaching from the polyps.
They often arrive in the Shonai region near Kamo Aquarium around autumn.

体長：オス～30cm、メス～20cm
函館以南（沖縄県を除く）に分布、やや内湾性で、岩礁域や転石の多い砂底に生息する。砂に潜ったり、横になったりして休む習性がある。ベラ科の中では最も味が良いといわれる。
青っぽい体色のものと赤っぽい体色のものと、別種とも思えるほどの2型がある。メスは赤っぽい体色で、成長するとオスへと性転換する。青っぽい体色のものは全て性転換したオス個体である。一方、生まれながらオス個体もおり、メスと同じ体色で外見からは見分けることができない。これを「一次オス」、性転換した青色体色のものを「二次オス」と呼び、二次オスはハーレムを形成するが、一次オスはメスのふりをしてハーレムに入り、繁殖行動をすることもあるという。

水深500ｍ以深にも多く生息し、北海道北部では通年、庄内浜では冬～春に出現し、ときに大量発生する。
2004年に新しく和名がついた。
水管系が複雑に蛇行していること、櫛板列（光を反射している器官）が口の所までしかないなど、同属のカブトクラゲと容易に見分けることができる。
This species is abundant at depths of 500 meters and below. It appears year-round in northern Hokkaido and from winter to spring at Shonai Beach, sometimes occurring in large numbers.
It received a new Japanese name in 2004.
It can be easily distinguished from the related Bolinopsis mikado by its complexly meandering water canal system and the fact that its comb plates (light-reflecting organs) extend only to the mouth.

体長：～40cm
南日本（琉球列島を除く）に分布、沖合から大陸棚にかけての水深50～200mの海底に生息する。マダイに似るが、体側に青色点はなく、体は黄色味を帯びる。背側に黄色斑が3つある。産卵期は初夏と秋の2回。
