庄内浜には夏～秋に多く出現し、時に大量発生する。体側には、有櫛動物特有の８列の櫛板列があり、光を反射し綺麗に光る。この櫛板列は、体の上の方からド ミノ倒しのように規則正しく動き、泳ぐための推進力を得ることが出来る。 学名のmikadoは帝が頭にかぶるカブトに似ていることが由来と言われている。当館では本種の累代繁殖に成功している。

 

Shonai Beach in front of Kamo Aquarium sees frequent appearances of this species from summer to autumn, sometimes in large numbers. Its body sides feature eight rows of comb plates characteristic of comb jellies, which reflect light beautifully.
These comb plates move in a regular, domino-like pattern from the upper body down, generating the propulsive force needed for swimming.
Its scientific name, mikado, is said to derive from its resemblance to the helmet worn by the Emperor.
Our aquarium has successfully achieved successive generations of breeding for this species.
