クラゲのように見えるが、ポリプ群体である。名前の由来は中央のキチン質が銀貨に見えるため。

ポリプは青色または白色の枝を多数そなえた群体を形成し、銀白色の円盤状の浮きの下に付着して水面に浮遊している。飼育が非常に難しく、展示期間は数週間程度。じっと見てると、ポリプからクラゲが遊離する様子が観察できる。

庄内地方には秋ごろにやってくることが多い。

 

This species resembles a jellyfish but is actually a polyp colony.

Its name originates from its central chitinous structure resembling a silver coin.
The polyps form colonies with numerous blue or white branches, attached beneath a silvery-white, disc-shaped float that keeps them afloat on the water surface.

They are extremely difficult to keep in captivity, with exhibition periods lasting only a few weeks.

If you watch closely, you can observe jellyfish detaching from the polyps.
They often arrive in the Shonai region near Kamo Aquarium around autumn.
