ユウレイクラゲの仲間は大型の種類が多いが、このクラゲは大きくなっても12ｃｍ程と比較的小型の種類。

以前はキタユウレイクラゲのカラーバリエーションの一つとして考えられていた。

 

While many species of Cyanea are large, this jellyfish remains relatively small, growing to only about 12 cm even when fully grown.

It was previously considered a color variant of the Northern Ghost Jellyfish.

日本の伝統的な織物である縮緬(ちりめん)に例えられるような美しい色彩をもつ。東南アジアなどの温暖な海域に生息する。

傘径は20 cmほどであるが、時に60 cmに達することもある。

国内では当館が2番目の展示である。

当館では繁殖に成功し、現在生活史に関する研究論文を執筆中である。

 

It possesses beautiful colors reminiscent of chirimen, a traditional Japanese fabric. It inhabits warm waters in Southeast Asia and other regions.
Its canopy diameter is about 20 cm, though it can sometimes reach 60 cm.
This is the second exhibition of its kind at my aquarium.
We have successfully bred this species at my aquarium and are currently writing a research paper on its life history.

花のような形をしているが、クラゲのポリプである。

ポリプは群体性で棲管はキチン質で構成されている。

直径は20 cmを超えることもある。

触れるとチクチクとした痛みとともに水膨れになり、火傷のような痕が残ることもある。

棲管内でクラゲへの変態が行われ、遊離したエフィラは成熟した生殖巣を有し、すぐに産卵して数日以内のうちに死んでしまう。

 

Although this species resembles a flower, it is actually a jellyfish polyp.
Polyp colonies are colonial, and their bell is composed of chitin.
The bell can exceed 20 cm in diameter.
Touching it causes a prickling pain and blisters, and may leave burn-like scars.
Metamorphosis into a jellyfish occurs inside the bell; the released ephyra possess mature gonads, lay eggs immediately, and die within a few days.

傘高７mmほどの小さなクラゲ。触手は1本のみ。

「カタアシクラゲ」という別の種類のクラゲがいるが、触手の形状や体色などが異なる。

しかし、顕微鏡で見ないとわからない・・・。

 

Often seen in southern Japan during spring.
A small jellyfish with a bell diameter of about 7mm. It has only one tentacle.
There is another jellyfish species called “Corymorpha bigelowi ,” but it differs in tentacle shape and body color.
However, you can’t tell without a microscope…

２０１３年に長崎県の大村湾で採集された個体に基づき新種記載され、隣接する佐世保湾でも出現 が確認された。

その後、２０２４年に約１０年ぶりに東京都の江戸川放水路で発見された。

江戸川区子ども未来館の協力により、本種を採集して展示することができた。

 

A new species was described based on specimens sampled in Omura Bay, Nagasaki Prefecture in 2013, and its presence was also confirmed in the adjacent Sasebo Bay.
Subsequently, in 2024, it was discovered in the Edogawa Diversion Channel in Tokyo for the first time in about ten years.
With the cooperation of the Edogawa Ward Children’s Future Museum, we were able to conduct sampling and display this species.

２０１３年に約１００年ぶりに再発見され、初めて繁殖に成功し、２０１７年６月１日に北里大学と新江ノ島水族館の３館で世界初展示を行った。

飼育下ではヒョウ柄模様が出にくい。ポリプが非常に小さいため、育成は難しい。

 

This species was rediscovered in 2013 after approximately 100 years, successfully bred for the first time, and exhibited globally for the first time on June 1, 2017, at three institutions: Kitasato University and the New Enoshima Aquarium.
In captivity, its leopard-like pattern is difficult to observe.

Due to its extremely small polyps, cultivation is challenging.

2025年に中国の東シナ海で発見された。

傘径が最大45cm程度まで成長する大型のクラゲ。

未成熟時は傘の縁が鮮やかな青色に染まるが成長とともに徐々に消失していく。

日本では当館が初展示のクラゲ。

 

This species was discovered in the East China Sea off China in 2025.
It is a large jellyfish, with a bell diameter growing up to approximately 45 cm.
When immature, the bell margin is vividly blue, but this color gradually fades as it matures.
This is the first jellyfish exhibition at my aquarium in Japan.

This species is known as an edible jellyfish and inhabits the northern California Bay.
This is the first time it has been exhibited in my aquarium, and it has been given the provisional name “Amber Cannonball” due to its amber body color.
Polyps were received from overseas, and the ephyra stage was released and cultivated.

This species has been observed in the Gulf of California, Sonora, Mexico.
We received polyps from overseas and cultivated them by releasing ephyra.
In my aquarium, I primarily feed them Aurelia coerulea.
Some individuals exhibit different colors in their tentacles depending on the polyp, but the reason for this is unknown.

It is distributed along the Atlantic coast of Europe.
The cap diameter grows up to approximately 65 cm and is apparently edible.
We received polyps from overseas and bred them.
As it grows larger, the oral arm appendages also elongate.

This species belongs to the family of Aurelia inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea.

It turns a pale purple color when fully grown.
The family of Aurelia includes over 20 species, including unofficial ones, and the number of species is expected to increase in the future.
