久米島沖で採集された外洋性の立方クラゲ。4本の触手のうち、2本は非常に短く、残り2本はとても長いことが特徴。触手上に側枝を備え、各側枝は甲殻類のカイアシによく似ており、間違えて寄ってきた仔稚魚を捕えるための疑似餌のような役割を果たすと考えられる。
和名のカグツチは日本神話に登場する火の神「迦具土」に由来する。新江ノ島水族館と世界同時初展示を行った。

A pelagic cubozoan sampled off the coast of Kumejima. It is characterized by two of its four tentacles being very short, while the other two are very long.
This species has lateral branches on its tentacles that closely resemble copepods; these are thought to serve as decoys to capture juvenile fish that have mistakenly swum too close.
Its Japanese name, “Kagutsuchi,” derives from “Kagutsuchi,” the god of fire in Japanese mythology.
It was exhibited for the first time worldwide in a simultaneous display with the Shin-Enoshima Aquarium.This exhibition was made possible with the cooperation of Ryo Minemizu of Minemizu Photography and Suzuka Kaneshiro of Minemizu Photography and the
Kitasato University School of Marine Biosciences at Kitasato University.
