本種はヨーロッパ沿岸域に生息しており、海外の水族館からポリプを譲り受けて繁殖させた。
日本に生息するミズクラゲは、以前は本種の学名であるAurelia auritaが使われていた。しかし、遺伝子解析などの研究により、日本沿岸に生息するミズクラゲがAurelia coeruleaとされた。
This species is distributed along the coasts of Europe, and we successfully bred it using polyps received from overseas aquariums.
The moon jellyfish found in Japanese waters were previously identified as Aurelia aurita, the scientific name of this species. However, research including genetic analysis has determined that the moon jellyfish inhabiting the coasts of Japan are actually Aurelia coerulea.
