世界最大級のクラゲで刺胞の毒はかなり強い。シャーロックホームズの小説にも登場する。

北半球の冷水域に広く分布し、日本では北海道から東北地方で見られる。

ミズクラゲをよく食べ、傘径５０ｃｍ以上にまで成長する。

 

One of the world’s largest jellyfish, its nematocyst venom is quite potent.

It also appears in Sherlock Holmes novels.
Widely distributed in cold waters of the Northern Hemisphere, it can be found in Japan from Hokkaido to the Tohoku region.
It feeds heavily on Aurelia coerulea and grows to a bell diameter exceeding 50 cm.
