花のような形をしているが、クラゲのポリプである。

ポリプは群体性で棲管はキチン質で構成されている。

直径は20 cmを超えることもある。

触れるとチクチクとした痛みとともに水膨れになり、火傷のような痕が残ることもある。

棲管内でクラゲへの変態が行われ、遊離したエフィラは成熟した生殖巣を有し、すぐに産卵して数日以内のうちに死んでしまう。

 

Although this species resembles a flower, it is actually a jellyfish polyp.
Polyp colonies are colonial, and their bell is composed of chitin.
The bell can exceed 20 cm in diameter.
Touching it causes a prickling pain and blisters, and may leave burn-like scars.
Metamorphosis into a jellyfish occurs inside the bell; the released ephyra possess mature gonads, lay eggs immediately, and die within a few days.
