傘高：～20cm

瀬戸内海に特に多く、11月～12月に見られる。

毒性が非常に強く、刺されると火傷をしたような痛みを伴うため、「火水母(ひくらげ)」という和名が付いたと言われる。

成長すると傘径20cm以上になるが、飼育は難しい。写真は稚クラゲ時のものである。

 

Particularly abundant in the Seto Inland Sea, visible from November to December.
It is said to have earned the japanese name “fire jellyfish” (hikurage) due to its extremely potent toxicity; a sting causes pain akin to a burn.
They can grow to a bell diameter exceeding 20 cm, but is difficult to keep in captivity. The photo shows it in its juvenile stage.
