１９８９年に三重県の鳥羽水族館の水槽内で発見され、新種記載された。
これまで自然界で発見されたという報告はなかったが、すでに過去に中国で採集されており、別の種類のクラゲ（ギヤマンクラゲの仲間 Tima formosa ）として誤って登録されていたことが、２０２３年の研究で判明した。
この研究には共同研究として当館も携わっている。
It was discovered in a tank at Toba Aquarium in Mie Prefecture in 1989 and described as a new species.
Although no reports of its discovery in the wild had been made until now, a 2023 study revealed that it had already been collected in China in the past and was mistakenly registered as a different jellyfish species (Tima formosa).
My aquarium participated in this study as a collaborator.
