東北から北海道に分布し、夏～秋に見られる。

通常、寿命を迎えたクラゲは死んで跡形もなく溶け去るが、ベニクラゲではクラゲが球状の肉塊となったあと、そこから走根（ストロン）が伸びポリプとなる。このような生活史の逆転現象がみられるが、ニホンベニクラゲよりは事例が少ない。

年も取るし、死ぬこともあるので不老不死ではない。

ポリプは簡単に得ることができるが、ポリプからクラゲを遊離させる条件が判明していない。

この条件を解明して通年展示を目指したい。

 

This species is distributed from Tohoku to Hokkaido and is observed from summer to autumn.
Typically, jellyfish die and dissolve without a trace when they reach the end of their lifespan. However, in this species, the jellyfish transforms into a spherical mass of flesh, from which stron extend to form polyps.
This reversal in the life cycle is observed, though less frequently than in the Turritopsis spp.
They do age and can die, so they are not immortal.
Polyps can be easily obtained, but the conditions for releasing jellyfish from the polyps remain unknown.
We aim to clarify these conditions and achieve year-round display.
