北海道から西日本までの沿岸域に分布する。

傘を真上から見ると中央に×印のように見える生殖腺が特徴的。

ポリプが非常に小さいため、繁殖が難しい。

庄内浜では３～５月に港湾など波の穏やかな所に出現するため、春を告げるクラゲとも呼ばれている。

和名は、100年ほど前に来日したドイツの生物学者フランツ・ドフラインに由来する。

 

This species is distributed along coastal areas from Hokkaido to western Japan.
When viewed from directly above, its characteristic feature is a reproductive gland appearing like an X-mark at the center.
Breeding is difficult because the polyps are extremely small.
They appear in calm areas like harbors along Shonai Beach from March to May, earning them the name “jellyfish heralding spring.”
The Japanese name originates from Franz Doflein, a German biologist who came to Japan about 100 years ago.
