名前の通り丸いお椀型の傘をしている。

傘の縁にはGFPがあり、刺激を受けると緑色に蛍光を発する。

２００８年に下村脩先生がノーベル賞を受賞し話題になった。

日本に生息するオワンクラゲとは種類が異なる。

 

This jellyfish received increased attention when Dr. Osamu Shimomura was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2008. Its umbrella contains aequorin and green fluorescent protein (GFP). When exposed to ultraviolet light, it emits a green fluorescence.

It differs in species from the Aquarea coerulescens inhabiting Japan.
