水深500ｍ以深にも多く生息し、北海道北部では通年、庄内浜では冬～春に出現し、ときに大量発生する。

2004年に新しく和名がついた。

水管系が複雑に蛇行していること、櫛板列（光を反射している器官）が口の所までしかないなど、同属のカブトクラゲと容易に見分けることができる。

 

This species is abundant at depths of 500 meters and below. It appears year-round in northern Hokkaido and from winter to spring at Shonai Beach, sometimes occurring in large numbers.

It received a new Japanese name in 2004.

It can be easily distinguished from the related Bolinopsis mikado by its complexly meandering water canal system and the fact that its comb plates (light-reflecting organs) extend only to the mouth.
